First floor furnishings and moderate updates, including living, dining, office, & mudroom; primary bedroom; outdoor terrace

Jared Kuzia

It’s a real treat when a former client comes back around with a new project. In this case, our client returned to us in a new phase of life. In the years since we transformed her Capitol Hill rowhouse, she’d married and moved into a larger space in the Wesley Heights neighborhood of Washington, DC. The goal of the couple’s project was evident – to merge her rustic, earthy tendencies with his preference for clean, modern lines, and to add personality to a house that was largely a blank slate.

Plans to bring both warmth and polish to the expansive white space resulted in a dramatically cozy living room and a moody dining room with earthy, green plaster walls and a soapstone fireplace mantel. Custom cabinetry and desks optimized the space in the office, while the mudroom received a welcome, functional (and stylish!) upgrade. A warm and neutral primary bedroom upstairs is a restful retreat for the active couple.
